Sapphire and Steel

All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic heavy elements may not be used where there is life. Medium atomic weights are available: Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver and Steel. Sapphire and Steel have been assigned.

Sapphire & Steel was a TV series that was broadcast in the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1982, starring Joanna Lumley as “Sapphire” and David MacCallum as “Steel”. Two entities with strange powers sent by a mysterious authority for the task of fixing breaches in the corridor of time, and often vanquishing bizarre Eldritch horrors that may be totally outside what normal humans could ever truly understand. The monsters are frequently of a kind that ordinary human beings usually can’t even recognise as a danger until it’s too late. The scariest horrors are those which come from abstract monsters that can’t be described properly, defying not merely description but also real comprehension. The imagination adds to the nightmarish horror because it surely must be far worse than anything a human could truly understand.

Sapphire & Steel was a very dark series. A combination of science fiction, fantasy, supernatural, and Lovecraft-like horror, set in the modern day (or mostly was). It probably inspired many people to have nightmares. The lead characters weren’t human, and frequently behaved rather callously towards humanity (especially Steel) though rescuing people from bad situations if they could. They didn’t always win a true victory, and the costs were often high.

Nothing was ever fully explained, and the mysterious origins, even exactly what these “element” agents truly were, also was never explained. The sets were cheap, claustrophobic. The budget minuscule. The effects minimal. The acting and scripting were however superb.

After the network changed ownership, the series was cancelled, but the stories continued to be published by “Look In” magazine as a regular comic strip for about 70+ issues, and more recently as a series of audiobooks published by Big Finish.

I never had the chance to watch much of the series when I was a child, and found about Sapphire & Steel only a few years ago by random chance. I’m now a fan of this short-lived series. Inspired by it, I wrote a couple of stories which you can read on fanfiction.net here; https://www.fanfiction.net/u/9685285/OnlyTheGhosts

The first story for Sapphire & Steel that I wrote was The Trap Disarmed.

The story resolved the ending of the final episode of the TV series, logically and appropriately. No “deux ex machina” or out of character miracles. In brief, using only the clues and what was in the episode, without adding anything extra in abilities, I wrote how Steel could solve the puzzle of the trap, and use his and Sapphire’s abilities to escape the trap.

My 2nd story written for Sapphire & Steel is The Gazenkazza

It’s a continuation of the series, and set in modern day Japan. It starts with the investigation of the ruins of a bankrupt love hotel. The story is intended to be at least several chapters long, unfortunately so far I haven’t yet finished it. Hopefully, one of these days if there’s enough interest, then I will get around to doing so.
